United States Requests Consultations Under the USMCA Over Mexico’s Energy Policies

On July 20, 2022, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), announced that the United States had requested dispute settlement consultations with Mexico under Chapter 31 of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), regarding certain measures implemented by the Mexican government in the energy sector, favoring Mexico’s state-owned electrical utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE for its acronym in Spanish), and state-owned oil and gas company Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX for its acronym in Spanish).
